How this comparison was researched

We reviewed the public LikeWave and DolphinRadar product pages and ran a desktop browser check on September 9, 2026. The same public Instagram username, @nasa, was entered into each platform’s main profile tool. No Instagram account was connected, and no paid plan was purchased.

The check recorded whether the account could be processed, whether registration appeared before the result, how long the attempt took, which free metrics were visible, whether a follower-count restriction appeared, and how clearly each company described its data.

This was a practical access test, not a benchmark of every server, location, or account type. Instagram changes can temporarily affect any third-party viewer. A verification screen or slow lookup in one session does not prove that every visitor will have the same experience.

The LikeWave report displayed 104.4 million followers, 91 accounts followed, approximately 4,900 posts, a 0.37% engagement rate, 388,900 average likes, and 1,300 average comments for the account at the time of the check. These figures are a dated third-party snapshot, not official Instagram Insights.

DolphinRadar presented a Cloudflare “Verify you are human” step after the username was submitted. That is worth recording because it added friction in the tested session. It should not be interpreted as a permanent failure or as evidence that normal visitors will always encounter the same check.

The two “likes viewers” answer different questions

The shared terminology is slightly misleading.

Choose LikeWave for post-performance patterns across a profile. Choose DolphinRadar when the identities and behavior of visible likers matter more than an aggregate engagement rate.

LikeWave is simpler for a quick comment check

The LikeWave Comment Viewer accepts a public post or Reel URL and normally returns up to 50 recent comments. It does not require a LikeWave account, and the reviewed page did not show a paid upgrade, credit balance, or export workflow.

DolphinRadar offers a smaller free preview. Its Comment Viewer lists a maximum of 15 comments on the free tier. LikeWave is the easier product to understand financially. The reviewed analytics, comment, Story, and video pages were free and did not present a subscription. No Instagram login or LikeWave registration was required during the successful profile test.

DolphinRadar uses a freemium model. Its main Instagram Viewer page advertised a free tier alongside general tracking at $6.99 per month or $69.99 per year for one profile. Different DolphinRadar modules can have their own limits and prices. For example, the Likes Viewer page listed 20 recent likers for free and separate paid access for expanded liker data.

The subscription pays for work LikeWave does not currently claim to do: continuous tracking, bulk downloads, notifications, historical analysis, and exports. It is poor value if you only need a single engagement-rate check. It may be reasonable if the same public account must be monitored repeatedly.

Registration, privacy, and account access

Neither platform asked for an Instagram password in the reviewed workflow. Both describe their tools as limited to publicly available content. LikeWave says searches are processed to generate the report and that it does not build visitor profiles from them. DolphinRadar’s privacy policy lists the public profile information, posts, and engagement signals it may observe for requested tracking.

There is still a difference between an Instagram login and a service account. LikeWave’s public tools worked without either. DolphinRadar’s basic viewers are advertised without an Instagram login, but ongoing tracking, saved reports, and subscriptions require a DolphinRadar account.

Anonymous viewing does not transfer ownership of content. Downloaded photos and videos remain the creator’s work. Obtain permission before republishing them, especially in advertising or commercial content.

Which service explains its methodology better?

LikeWave explains its engagement-rate calculation at a useful introductory level: average likes and comments are compared with follower count. The tested report also showed a chart covering 12 recent posts. The public explanation does not say whether outliers are removed, how different content formats are weighted, or exactly how many posts are always included. Those details would make the number easier to reproduce.

DolphinRadar is clearer about the boundary of its data.
