Our August 2026 sample of 137 public Instagram accounts produced a median of 2,800 likes per post and a median follower-based like rate of 1.58%, but the distribution was far too uneven for either number to work as a universal benchmark.

The arithmetic mean was 52,610 likes per post—almost nineteen times the median—because a small number of celebrity-scale and unusually viral accounts pulled it upward. That difference is the central finding of this research: an Instagram like count has little meaning until it is evaluated against account size, recent posting history, content reach, and the shape of the underlying distribution.

Research definition: “Average likes per post” is the publicly reported average across an account’s latest 12 posts. “Like rate” is average likes divided by current followers, multiplied by 100. Neither metric measures unique viewers, sales, sentiment, or follower authenticity.

How many likes does the average Instagram post get in 2026?

In this sample, the technically defensible answer is 2,800 likes per post, the account-level median. The mean of 52,610 is mathematically correct, but it describes the dataset poorly. One account averaged 2.4 million likes per post, while 21 accounts averaged fewer than 100. Combining both ends into a single arithmetic average creates a number that resembles very few actual accounts.

The median treats each account equally and identifies the center of the observed distribution. It does not mean that a typical personal Instagram user receives 2,800 likes. The discovery sample intentionally contains public profiles with at least 1,000 followers and includes creators, brands, publishers, and celebrity-scale accounts. It is a benchmark for the public creator-discovery ecosystem, not for every Instagram user.

The 10th percentile was only 32 likes, while the 90th percentile was 64,460. In other words, the central 80% of this already filtered public-account sample spans roughly three orders of magnitude. Any article that presents one Instagram-wide “average likes” figure without its sampling frame is hiding most of the useful information.

Instagram like rate statistics

Absolute likes measure scale. Like rate adds context by dividing average likes by current follower count:

Like rate (%) = average likes per post ÷ followers × 100

The median like rate in our sample was 1.58%. One quarter of accounts were at or below 0.17%, while one quarter were at or above 5.86%. This spread shows why a single “good Instagram like rate” threshold is unreliable across account sizes and content categories.

A follower-based like rate can exceed 100%. This happened once in the sample, where the displayed average implied a rate of approximately 354%. It is not mathematically impossible: Instagram content, especially Reels, can reach and be liked by many non-followers. It can also reflect a recently viral content window, rounded public values, or a timing mismatch between the follower snapshot and recent post performance. For that reason, like rate should not be described literally as “the percentage of followers who liked the post.” The numerator is not restricted to followers, and the metric does not identify unique people.

Instagram likes by follower count

Absolute likes generally increased with audience size, but not in a smooth line. The correlation between log follower count and average likes was 0.411: positive, yet far from deterministic. The relationship with like rate was negative at −0.367, consistent with larger public accounts generating more likes in absolute terms while activating a smaller share relative to their follower count.

Two cautions are necessary. First, the nano tier has only six observations. Second, these tiers are not matched by account type, age, location, post format, or niche. The unexpectedly low macro median is a property of this sample, not a universal Instagram benchmark. It illustrates why campaign analysts should compare creators with genuinely comparable accounts instead of applying a platform-wide target.

Likes by discovery category

We discovered accounts through seven fixed search queries. Twenty-three accounts appeared under more than one query, so the rows below overlap and do not sum to 137. They describe the result sets produced by each discovery term, not mutually exclusive industries.

Beauty returned the highest median absolute like count, while fashion returned the highest median like rate. Those findings should not be converted into claims that one industry is inherently more engaging. The query groups have different follower distributions, gaming and tech have small sample sizes, and the search results include different mixes of people, companies, and publishers.

Verified versus non-verified accounts

The 86 verified accounts averaged a median 4,200 likes per post, compared with 1,300 among 51 non-verified accounts. The direction reversed after normalization: verified accounts had a median like rate of 1.34%, while non-verified accounts had 1.82%.

This is not evidence that verification reduces engagement. The median verified account had 674,000 followers, versus 54,100 for the non-verified group. Verification status, audience size, celebrity presence, account type, and age are tightly confounded in this convenience sample.

Likes compared with comments

Likes were the dominant visible interaction. Among 131 accounts with at least one measured like or comment, likes represented a median 98.1% of the combined total. Among 129 accounts with at least one average comment, the median likes-to-comments ratio was 52.5 to 1. Average likes and average comments had a strong positive rank correlation of 0.812.

That does not make likes 52 times more valuable. A like is a low-friction action; a relevant comment, save, share, profile visit, direct message, or purchase may carry more commercial intent. Instagram’s own explanation of ranking describes multiple prediction systems and interaction signals rather than a single like-driven algorithm.

What is a good number of Instagram likes?

A good number is one that is strong relative to comparable accounts and supports the campaign’s real objective. For a 40,000-follower micro account, 1,750 likes was the tier median in this study. The same count would be weak for a three-million-follower account and exceptional for a profile with 2,000 followers.

Use a three-layer comparison:

  1. Account baseline: compare the post with the account’s own recent median, not its single best viral post.
  2. Peer baseline: compare accounts within similar follower bands, niches, countries, and content formats.
  3. Business outcome: connect visible likes with reach, saves, shares, website clicks, leads, or sales.

Public counts are only part of the evidence. Instagram allows users to hide like counts, and professional accounts can review broader performance through Instagram Insights. For a paid collaboration, request first-party reach, accounts-engaged, audience-location, and content-format data instead of pricing a post from visible likes alone.

Methodology

Sampling

On August 10, 2026, we ran seven fixed public account-discovery searches for fitness, beauty, travel, food, fashion, gaming, and tech. The queries returned 165 account placements and 140 unique usernames. We removed three accounts with fewer than 1,000 followers, leaving N = 137. Twenty-three retained profiles appeared in multiple query sets.

The sample covers public accounts between 1,200 and 404 million followers. Its median account had approximately 219,000 followers. It contains creators, brands, publishers, public figures, and other accounts surfaced by creator-discovery search. It is therefore a cross-niche convenience sample, not a random draw from Instagram.

Measurements

For each account, we recorded the current follower count, verification status, average likes, average comments, engagement rate, and report date from publicly accessible account-level analytics generated from profile and post data. Each report summarized the account’s latest 12 posts and used the following engagement-rate formula:

Engagement rate = (average likes + average comments) ÷ followers × 100

All 137 reports were last checked between August 3 and August 10, 2026. Public values abbreviated with K or M were converted using K = 1,000 and M = 1,000,000. Because displayed values are rounded, derived like rates are approximate. The median absolute difference between the engagement rate reconstructed from displayed likes, comments, and followers and the published rate was 0.006 percentage points.

Statistics

The account is the unit of analysis. We calculated unweighted means, medians, 10th, 25th, 75th, and 90th percentiles, categorical frequencies, and Spearman rank correlations. Percentiles use linear interpolation. Each account receives equal weight regardless of follower count. No follower-weighted “Instagram-wide” average is reported because a handful of extremely large accounts would dominate it.

Six reports displayed zero average likes, and all six also displayed zero average comments. They were retained because zero was the public report value. A sensitivity check excluding the six zero-like reports changed the median from 2,800 to 3,100 likes and the median like rate from 1.58% to 1.63%, so the main conclusion was stable.

Researcher disclosure

This editorial study was compiled from publicly accessible account, follower, and recent-post metrics. It has not been audited against private Instagram Insights or Meta’s internal data. Account-level results and usernames are not published in this article; only aggregated statistics are reported.

Limitations

  • Non-random sample: results describe seven public discovery-query sets, not every Instagram account.
  • Mixed account types: creators, brands, publishers, and public figures behave differently.
  • Rounded public metrics: K and M abbreviations reduce numerical precision.
  • Visible likes may be incomplete: like counts can be hidden, unavailable, delayed, or affected by data-access limitations.
  • Twelve-post window: one viral post or temporary content shift can still influence an account average.
  • No reach denominator: follower-based like rate does not show likes per impression or per reached account.
  • No format control: the study does not separately match Reels, carousels, and static posts across all accounts.
  • No quality classification: the study counts reported likes and does not determine whether every interaction came from a genuine, relevant user.
  • Cross-sectional design: this is an August 2026 snapshot, not a growth or decline study.
